PHILADELPHIA - Temple University honored its best in athletics, both on and off the field, at its fourth annual Breakfast of Champions Wednesday morning. In all, over 200 Temple student-athletes were recognized for academic and athletic accomplishments with football standout Elliot Seifert being named the top senior male Student-Athlete of the Year and All-America candidate Adrienne Repsher of the softball team earning the top senior female Student-Athlete of the Year award.
"The Breakfast of Champions is the perfect way to celebrate as a community what is special about athletics at Temple University," said Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw, who instituted the event in 2003, his first full year at the school. "We annually recognize the `best of the best' at Temple, and Adrienne and Elliot are fine examples of what is good about intercollegiate athletics."
Seifert, a four-year letterwinner who played in the Texas vs. the Nation Senior All-Star game, concluded his career in Owl Country by making 34 consecutive starts at offensive tackle. A semifinalist for the Draddy Trophy - which recognizes an individual as the absolute best in the country for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary community leadership - he was a member of the 2006 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area All-Star Team.
A graduate student working toward a master's degree in biology, Seifert earned an undergraduate degree in biology in May 2006 and has been cited on both the Dean's List and Athletic Director's Honor Rolls during his academic career. A member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, the Reading, Pa. native spent a week in Ambergis Caye, Belize, to conduct infield research for a tropical marine biology class.
Repsher, a four-year letterwinner, is having arguably the greatest season in Temple softball history. The first baseman leads the Atlantic 10 and ranks among the nation's leaders in hitting (.464), slugging (1.036), on-base percentage (.540), home runs (13), RBI (35, 1.21 pg.) and fielding (1.000). She set the Temple record for homers in a season and career (22) this season.
The Nazareth, Pa. native Adrienne is an exceptional student as well. An elementary education major, Repsher maintains a 3.87 cumulative grade point average and has been selected to the Academic All-Atlantic 10 Conference and All-Area teams. She is also the President of the KAPPA Delta PI, the education honor society, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
Besides Seifert and Repsher, 120 student-athletes were named to the Director's Honor Roll (3.0-3.49 cumulative grade point averages) with the addition of 33 student-athletes to the President's Honor Roll (3.50 or above). The women's tennis team won the Top Team GPA Award for the fifth straight year with an aggregate grade point average of 3.378.
Athletically, senior Kamesha Hairston and freshman Melissa Parker were honored for earning All-America status in women's basketball and fencing.
The women's basketball and men's gymnastics team as well as four women's fencers - Christie Griffith, Kristine Jones, Samantha Myles and Melissa Parker - were also recognized for participating in the NCAA Tournament.
Freshman women's lacrosse player Chelsea Rosiek was honored for her selection as a representative to the 2007 NCAA National Leadership Conference.
Four Temple student-athletes - Dante Cammarata (Men's Crew), Jessica Chadwin (Women's Lacrosse), Dave D'Addario (Men's Track) and Megan Hannahoe (Field Hockey) - were named as the recipients of the Enterprise Spirit and Sportsmanship Award.
Fox 29's Don Tollefson, who has been involved with Philadelphia athletics as a television sports anchor for four decades, again served as the emcee for this year's Breakfast of Champions while Bill Mills, President of PNC Bank, was the presenting sponsor.
