FLAGSTAFF, AZ -
Junior Cori Gallagher scored an unassisted goal in the 105th minute to lead the Temple women's soccer team to a 3-2 overtime win over Eastern Washington Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Hilton Inn Mountain Garden Classic.
Gallagher's goal came off a direct kick from 25-yards out. It was her fifth career goal, and second game-winner of her career. The 2006 Honorable Mention All-Atlantic 10 Conference performer scored a game-winner last year against Wagner.
"Our goal was to come out and win both matches," said head coach David Jones. "Coming back 1-0-1 is huge for us, and hopefully we will be able to pick up two wins next weekend."
Freshman Meredith Crowell celebrated her 19th birthday by opening the scoring. The Lansdale, Pa. native one-timed a header from fellow freshman Sara Scheid off a corner kick in the 25th minute.
Junior forward Wendy Halina stripped a defender and scored an unassisted goal just four minutes later to put the Owls ahead 2-0.
The altitude started to catch up with the Cherry and White in the second half. EWU's Chelsey Hannesson scored an unassisted goal in the 66th minute - the first allowed by freshman keeper Kara Williams (5 saves) in the two games - to cut the deficit in half. Brittney Doran then connected with Cyeeta Mott for the tying goal in the 83rd minute. Temple out-played Eastern Washington in the first overtime period, but was unable to capitalize until Gallagher's winner in the second extra period.
Temple (1-0-1) opens its home schedule Friday against Cleveland State (4:00 p.m.) at Ambler Field.
