Ambler, PA-The Temple Owls opened Atlantic 10 play with their first win over the Dayton Flyers (7-3) in thirteen tries. The Owls got two goals in the last five minutes of the first half and freshman goalie Kara Williams had nine saves to help Temple improve to 5-2-2 on the season.
Junior Katrina Lynch scored her second goal of the year with a beautiful give and go to sophomore Jessica Aaron in the 42nd minute. Only two minutes later a tough shot from junior Cori Gallagher caused a rebound that freshman Sara Scheid calmly passed across the box for junior Kersha Walker to tap in for the game winner.
The Owls found themselves playing defense for the first 15 minutes of the game. After they got comfortable they controlled the game until the Flyers added their only goal in the 67th minute off the foot of freshman Kelly Blumenschein. Temple spent the last 20 minutes successfully fending off the Flyers desperate attempts to send the game to overtime.
The Flyers had 18 shots with 12 of them coming in the second half. The Owls defense, led by Gallagher and Williams, was able to hold them off.
Temple now has five wins which is more than they have had in any season since 2002 when they had eight. The Owls will continue Atlantic 10 play when they travel to Rhode Island on Sunday for a 1:00 PM kickoff.
