Ambler, Pa.- Temple netted six second-half goals to earn a dominating 8-1 victory over the visiting Cleveland State Vikings on Friday afternoon. Freshman Kelly Diviny and junior Jenna Rankin both notched a goal and an assist to aid in the win and help keep the Owls undefeated. Temple (2-0-1) is off to its best start since the 1992 season. The Vikings fall to 1-3 on the season.
Diviny wasted no time in getting the Owls on the board, chipping a ball high above CSU goalie Kelly Zinkiewich's head for a tally just 13 seconds into the contest. The Vikings managed to tie it up 14 minutes later when Shayna Beck crossed a ball into the bottom right hand corner of the goal. Kelly Lare's corner kick put TU back on top just four minutes later when the senior sent the ball into the box where Meridith Crowell was waiting to head it in.
The second half was all Temple, as the hosts squandered the competition. Charisma Wright made it 3-1 when she dribbled down the far right side and tapped the ball past Zinkiewich with almost no angle. Wendy Halina got in on the action in the 53rd minute, making it 4-1. Halina's intial shot was blocked by a defender but she collected the deflection and booted the ball into the lower left-hand corner of the goal. Diviny and Rankin teamed to score Temple's fifth goal at 56:43 and Julia Adden made it 6-1 just four minutes later after booting a ball right above the goalie's head. Rankin crossed the ball onto Jessica Aaron's feet to make it 7-1 at 63:56. Katherine Schmelz finished off the scoring at 71:10 after collecting a pass from freshman Valerie Klemencic.
Temple outshot Cleveland State, 25-7. Kara Williams had three saves in goal for Temple, while Tiffany Kasunich contributed one in 26 minutes of action. Zinkiewich had seven saves in the loss for the Vikings.
The Owls return to action on Sunday, hosting Philly rival Drexel at 1 p.m.
