Tempe, Ariz. - Competing for the first in 2008, the Temple softball team fell to California 11-0 in five innings in its opening game at the Kajikawa Classic on Friday afternoon.
Sophomore Krystle Metzler paced the offense with a double, providing the only extra base hit for the Owls on the day. Junior Katie Burdeaux and freshman Samantha Dungan also hit safely for the Owls. For Dungan, it was her first career hit in a Cherry and White uniform.
Burdeaux (0-1) took the loss, allowing seven runs in two innings while striking out one. She was relived by freshmen Amanda Branco, who allowed four runs in two innings of relief work.
After only allowing one run in the opening frame, the Bears offense exploded in the second inning to break the game open. The Bears got a key hit from Heather Camara, who belted a two-run double to center field. Valerie Arioto also had a big hit for Cal when her two-run double landed in center field. The Bears led 7-0 after the second and never looked back.
The Owls have no time to think about defeat, as they are back in action at 5:30 to take on Western Michigan.
