Moraga, Calif.-Senior Whitney Richards scored five goals, four of which came in the first half, to lead the Temple women's lacrosse team to a commanding 17-4 win over St. Mary's College (Calif.) on Tuesday. Fellow senior Berkley Summerlin chipped in with three goals and three assists as Temple improves to 2-2 on the season.
Chelsea Rosiek, Hillary Richards and Nicole Caniglia each had two goals and an assist, while Britney Hoffman, Janell Myers and Lindsey Colferai all contributed a goal a piece. Ann Stouffer and Lindsey Wells each dished one assist.
Temple jumped out to a 3-0 lead just six minutes into the game off of goals by Rosiek, Caniglia and Whitney Richards. St. Mary's P.J. Hainley responded with back-to-back goals within a minute to close the gap to one goal but that would be as close as the Gaels would ever come. Whitney Richards' free position goal at 20:37 sparked a 9 goal run that allowed the Owls to take a 12-2 lead at the break.
The second stanza was more of the same as Myers made it 13-2 in favor of Temple at 26:45. St. Mary's scored back-to-back goals to end the scoring barrage but it was just a brief hiccup as the Owls scored four more to end the game with the 17-4 result.
Bridget McMullan stopped two shots as TU's starting goalkeeper, while Jessica Colucci had five shots. Katie Phillips saw nearly nine minutes of action but was not tested. Hilary Gardner and Whitney Campitiello split time in goal for St. Mary's, tallying six and one saves, respectively.
The Cherry and White wrap up their West Coast swing on Thursday when they take on UC-Davis at 6 p.m. EST.
