PHILADELPHIA- Sophomore Chelsea Rosiek converted a free position shot with just four seconds remaining to give the Temple women's lacrosse team (4-3, 1-0 A-10) a 9-8 win over the Saint Joseph's Hawks (4-3, 0-1 A-10) in the teams' Atlantic 10 opener on Thursday. The Hawks raced out to a 4-0 lead but the Owls used a six goal run in the second half to take the lead with under 16 minutes to play.
Nicole Caniglia and Brittany Hoffman scored two goals for Temple, while Whitney Richards, Berkley Summerlin, Hillary Richards, Andrea DeSabato and Rosiek all had one goal a piece. Summerlin, and the Richards twins each dished one assist.
The Hawks wasted no time getting on the board in the first half, scoring four straight goals in the first 14 minutes of the game. Caniglia netted an unassisted goal with eight minutes remaining for Temple's first tally but SJU answered two minutes later to keep the four goal differential (5-1). Hillary Richards found Summerlin just before time expired to make it 5-2 at the break.
Saint Joseph's started off strong yet again, netting a goal just 55 seconds into the half but Temple would not be quiet for long. Whitney Richards found Hillary Richards wide open in front of the goal at 26:34, sparking a 6-0 Temple run and giving the Owls their first lead, 8-6, with 15:56 remaining. SJU's Jenna Martino ended the 15 minute Hawk scoring drought at 14:20 and began a two goal run that tied the game at eight with 11 minutes to play. The Conference rivals battled for the remainder of the game, neither team willing to back down. The Hawk defense was put to the test in the last six minutes, with Temple continuously firing shots and then coming up with the groundball to allow for another round. The Cherry and White finally got their big break when Rosiek drew a foul in the eight meter with 4.6 seconds remaining. The sophomore took her position and then fired a shot into the upper right-hand corner of the goal to give TU the win and avoid overtime.
Bridget McMullan started in goal for Temple and had one save. Jessica Colucci stopped three SJU shots in 46 minutes. Suzy Herlihy had three saves for the Hawks.
Temple outshot Saint Joe's, 21-16, and had a 21-13 groundball edge. The Hawks dominated draw controls, however, grabbing 12 to Temple's six.
TU returns to action on March 28 when it hosts St. Bonaventure at 3 p.m.
