AMBLER, PA - After struggling to put the bat on the ball the previous weekend, the Temple softball team's offense certainly came to life against Coppin State, dominating the Eagles 24-0 and 13-0 in a double-header from the Ambler Sports Complex on Tuesday afternoon. The 24-0 victory in the first game is the most runs scored and largest margin of victory for the Owls since they defeated the same Eagles squad 28-0 back in 1995.
Between the two games, the Owls (7-8, 0-2) scored 37 runs on 31 hits while allowing no runs on three hits. In the first contest, junior Katie Burdeaux (2-3) tossed her first career no-hitter to silence the Eagle bats.
In the first game, the Owls proved to be too much for the over-matched Eagles (0-12) from the beginning. Sophomore Krystle Metzler was the star at the plate for the Owls, blasting two home runs while batting 4 of 5 on the day. Freshmen San Dungan also blasted four hits on the day, including her first career home run. Senior Teresa Bonavita smashed two triples in the game, while seniors Natalie Wagner and junior Courtney Norene each hit a home run apiece. For the game, the Owls finished with 20 hits five home runs and nine different players hit safely.
It was more of the same in the second game, as the Owls jumped out to a 5-0 lead after one inning and never looked back. Bonavita was the start at the plate in the second game, hitting her first home run of the season while adding another triple. Freshmen Chelsea Reicher also connected the first home run of her career while Norene added three RBI on two hits.
Freshman Amanda Branco (1-2) picked up the first victory of her career, shutting out the Eagles over five innings while striking out six.
The Owls return to conference action this weekend when they travel to Dayton to take on the Flyers . Action is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
