Lehigh, Pa.- The Temple women's soccer team opened up their spring season on April 5 with a tournament at Lehigh University, defeating Lafayette, 1-0, dropping a 2-1 decision to the host Mountain Hawks.
In the first game against Lafayette, the Owls did not have to wait long for the game-winner as Steph Ferretti's goal just 20 minutes in proved to be the difference maker. The Cherry and White were able to control big stretches of the game and had several great chances to increase the lead, but in the end had to settle for the 1-0 victory.
"It was a good way to start off the spring," said Head Coach David Jones. "We played very well at times during the game and I was pleased with our team defending and the defending of our back 4 in the first game."
Temple faced Lehigh immediately following the Lafayette game but unfortunately was not able to continue its winning streak. The Owls came out a bit sluggish and the Mountain Hawks took full advantage, scoring a goal 15 minutes into the game. Lehigh was able to take the 1-0 lead into halftime. The hosts made it 2-0 early in the second half on a goal from a turnover deep in the Owls' defensive half. Brianna Costello finally got the Owls going after heading home a corner kick from Kelly Diviny to make it 2-1. The two teams traded scoring opportunities for the rest of the half but ended the contest, 2-1, in favor of Lehigh.
"The second game we started a bit flat," commented Jones. "I was pleased with the second half as we played with better intensity and patience at times. We still have a lot to work on but it was a good start for the spring."
Temple is back in action on Friday evening at Christopher Dock High School, hosting a doubleheader with the Temple men's team. The men's game will kick-off at 6:30pm followed by the women at 8:00pm.
