Washington, D.C.- Whitney Richards scored three goals, including the game-winner and dished three assists to give the Temple women's lacrosse team its sixth straight win, a 12-10 victory at George Washington on Friday afternoon. The Owls improve to 9-3 overall and are a perfect 6-0 in Atlantic 10 play, their best start since the 1998 season. GW drops to 3-10 overall and 1-4 in the A-10.
Chelsea Rosiek had three goals and one assist, while Berkley Summerlin had two goals and two assists. Nicole Caniglia scored two goals and Janell Myers and Brittany Hoffman each added one goal a piece. Hillary Richards dished two assists on the day.
The first and second halves were almost identical with the Owls netting six goals and the Colonials scoring five times in each stanza. Whitney Richards gave Temple its first goal just over two minutes into the game but George Washington answered with two goals in a span of 33 seconds to take a 2-1 lead at 24:19. Summerlin ended the GW run with a goal at 21:09 and Whitney Richards found the back of the net three minutes later to put Temple back on top, 3-2. The teams traded the lead for most of the rest of the half but Rosiek and Summerlin netted two goals in the final two minutes of the half to give Temple a 6-5 lead at the break.
The Owls demonstrated their dominance early in the second half, coming out of the gate with a three-goal run. Summerlin found Myers to begin the run and Rosiek and Caniglia each added one to make it 9-5 at 26:33. The Colonials ended the Temple barrage with their first goal of the half at 24:30 but Hoffman answered with her lone goal of the game to preserve the four goal lead. George Washington wasn't about to go down without a fight, however, and scored three straight goals to make it a one-goal game (10-9) with just over nine minutes to play. The Richards sisters teamed for a tally with 5:22 remaining to end the home team's run and Rosiek scored once more to give the Owls a 12-9 advantage with 4:28 left to play. The Colonials posted one last goal at 2:55 but it was not enough as Temple remained undefeated in A-10 play with the 12-10 win.
Bridget McMullan played 30 minutes as TU's starting goalkeeper and had five saves, while Jessica Colucci had two saves in 30 minutes of action. GW goalkeeper Caitlin Garman stopped two Owl shots.
Temple wraps up A-10 regular season play with a game at Richmond on Sunday. A win against the Spiders, who are also undefeated in Conference play, who give Temple the A-10 regular season championship and a #1 seed in the upcoming A-10 Tournament.
