Richards' Overtime Tally Leads Temple Women's Lacrosse To 10-9 Win Over Rutgers

Piscataway, N.J.- Whitney Richards scored netted a goal with just over a minute remaining in the second overtime period to lead the Temple women's lacrosse team (10-4) to a 10-9 victory over Rutgers (7-8) on Wednesday night. Trailing 9-8 with just over four minutes to play in regulation, Berkley Summerlin found the back of the net to send the game into extra periods. Nicole Caniglia led the Owls with four goals, all in the first half, and one assist.

Whitney Richards finished with two goals, one assist, three caused turnovers and three groundballs, while Summerlin chipped in with two goals. Senior Hillary Richards dished three assists to bring her season total to 17. Janell Myers and Chelsea Rosiek each had one goal.

Temple jumped out to a 3-0 lead just seven minutes into the contest, thanks to two straight goals by Caniglia. Rutgers wasn't quiet for long, however, as the Scarlet Knights scored two tallies to get within one goal (3-2) at 15:40. Caniglia struck again four minutes later to make it a two goal game yet again at 11:41. Rutgers made it 4-3 with seven minutes to play but a two goal Temple run closed the half with a 6-3 result.

Rosiek got the Owls started early, making it 7-3 just one minute into the second stanza but Rutgers rattled off four straight goals in a six minute span to tie the game at seven at 20:34. Whitney Richards found Summerlin at 19:09 to put Temple back in control, 8-7. The lead was short-lived however, as a two-goal Rutgers run gave the home team their first lead, 9-8, with just over 12 and a half minutes to play. Summerlin saved the day yet again, scoring the tying goal at 4:37 and sending the game into overtime.

After playing through nearly two scoreless overtime periods, Whitney Richards netted her 37th goal of the season with 1:09 remaining to end the game with the 10-9 result.

Bridget McMullan had five saves in nearly 49 minutes as TU's starting goalie. Jessica Colucci did not have any saves in just over 17 minutes of action. Rutgers' Sandra Abel stopped 10 Owl shots in 66 minutes.

The Owls return home to face city rival Villanova on Saturday at 11 a.m. Seniors Caniglia, McMullan, Lindsey McMullen, Whitney Richards, Hillary Richards, Summerlin and Lindsay Wells will be honored in a pre-game ceremony. The day will also honor the Cherry and White's adopted teammate Devon Lam and her family.
