College Park, Md.- The Temple women's lacrosse team gave third-seeded Maryland everything it had but it was not enough to withstand a 12 goal second-half outburst and a stifling Terrapin defense as the Owls fell 20-7 in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. Senior Berkley Summerlin led the Owls with three goals as TU ends its season with a 13-7 record. The Terps improve to 18-2 and will face the winner of the Georgetown/Duke First round game next Saturday.
Whitney Richards had two goals and one assist to finish with 78 points on the season, while Hillary Richards finished with one goal and one assist. Chelsea Rosiek chipped in with one goal.
Though the Terps outshot, Temple, 36-13, the Owls made it count when it could, scoring seven goals on 12 shots. Tracy Zimmer and Lindsay Wells were strong on defense, preventing various Maryland scoring opportunities.
Maryland wasted no time demonstrating their dominance, taking a 6-1 lead nine minutes into the contest but the Owls were extremely efficient, scoring a goal on every shot attempt. After the Terps took a 1-0 lead just 27 seconds into the game, the Owls responded with a four-minute offensive drive that resulted in the game tying goal at 25:28. Whitney Richards battled into the eight meter, drawing the foul, and converted a free position shot for the Owls' first goal of the game. Maryland rattled off five straight goals, forcing Temple to take a timeout to regroup. The Cherry and White came out of the break with a renewed competitiveness, earning the ensuing draw and charging down the field for a second tally. Temple took full advantage of its possession, passing the ball around and waiting for the perfect shot. Whitney Richards' shot in the upper right-hand corner made it 6-2, at 19:32. The Terps answered with a goal nearly a minute later but the Owls refused to quit. Hillary Richards found Chelsea Rosiek at 12:45 for TU's third goal and Berkley Summerlin made it a 7-4 game with an unassisted goal a minute later. The teams traded goals for the remainder of the half, making for an 8-5 score at halftime. The Owls had an opportunity to make it a two-goal game but Rosiek missed a wide-open net with 22 seconds left.
The Richards sisters got Temple started in the second stanza, with Whitney finding Hillary at 27:28 to make it 8-6. The Terps answered with five goals over the next 10 minutes to extend their lead to seven goals (13-6), the largest deficit since the opening minutes of the contest. Temple had various chances to score during its 10-minute scoring drought, but was unable to find the net until Summerlin's unassisted tally at 18:14. The offense spurt was short-lived, however, as Maryland rattled off five goals to make it 18-7 with just under 10 minutes to play. Unfortunately for Temple, Summerlin picked up two quick yellow cards, resulting in an ejection at 9:51 and the subsequent end of her collegiate career. The Owls could do little to stop the surging Terp offense and ended the season with the 20-7 result.
Bridget McMullan had four saves as TU's starting goalie, while Jessica Colucci earned four saves in nearly 19 minutes of play. Maryland's Allie Buote stopped three Temple shots in 60 minutes.
