DALLAS - Temple junior Andre Neblett (Rahway, N.J.) is one of 88 football players named to the Football Writers Association of America's watch list for the 2008 Bronko Nagurski Trophy, presented annually to the nation's best defensive player.
Neblett is a two-year starter at nose tackle for the Owls. Named to the 2007 second-team All-Mid-American Conference, he started all 12 games last fall, one of just seven Owls to start every game. Neblett had a career-high two sacks at Connecticut en route to being named the coaches' defensive player of the game. He earned the weekly honor three times during 2007. He shared the team's most improved defensive player award at the conclusion of 2007 spring drills. As a true freshman in 2006, Neblett played in all 12 games.
The list includes two finalists from the 2007 watch list, Ohio State senior LB James Laurinaitis, the 2006 Nagurski Trophy winner, and South Florida junior DE George Selvie.
The FWAA All-America Committee selects the Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner from the association's 11-man All-America defensive team in November. The watch list was developed by the FWAA All-America committee with the help of the schools and conferences.
The Charlotte Touchdown Club will hold the 2008 banquet on Sunday, Dec. 7, at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte. For the eighth straight season, the FWAA will also pick a Bronko Nagurski Defensive Player of the Week, beginning with games on Aug. 30 and running through the middle of November. A Bronko Nagurski Legends Award winner will also be selected from the FWAA's 1967 All-America team.
The Bronko Nagurski Trophy has been presented since 1993 and is awarded in memory of the legendary Nagurski, a former All-America lineman at Minnesota in 1927-29 and a star for professional football's Chicago Bears in the 1930s.
Temple opens the 2008 season at Army on Friday, August 29. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. before a national television audience on ESPNU. The Owls host Connecticut on Sept. 6 at Lincoln Financial Field in their home opener.
