Norene Named to Atlantic 10 Second Team and All-Academic Team

PHILADELPHIA - Junior Courtney Norene received two honors from the Atlantic 10, as she was named to the Atlantic 10 second team and the Atlantic 10 All-Academic team, the conference announced Tuesday following a vote conducted by the head coaches. Norene was a force at the plate for the Cherry and White all season long. She led the league with 10 home runs on her way to breaking the Temple softball all-time home run record against Rhode Island on April 12th. Norene finished the regular season 26th among all Division I softball players in home runs per game. For the season, Norene led the Owls in RBI (21), home runs (10), slugging percentage (.607) and total bases (65) She was also second on the team in hits (31), batting average (.290), on-base percentage (.367) and runs (22). In the classroom, Norene was equally successful. She earned a 3.38 GPA while majoring in Kinesiology. She was recently named to Temple's Director's Honor Roll and awarded the 2008 Diamond Award for her academic achievements. Saint Joseph's sophomore catcher Brooke Darreff and UMass junior pitcher Brandice Balschmiter have been named the 2008 Atlantic 10 Softball Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively. This marks Balschmiter's third consecutive Pitcher of the Year honor. Umass designated player Lindsay Maroney was tabbed as the Rookie of the Year and Elaine Sortino of Massachusetts was named Coach of the Year for the second straight year and ninth time overall. Additionally, senior Brianna Bricker, a third baseman and pitcher from St. Bonaventure, repeats as the Student- Athlete of the Year in voting among the Conference's sports information directors. The Owls finished the 2008 season with a record of 15-24.
