PHILADELPHIA - Temple student-athletes Candice Borrows (women's basketball) and Courtney Norene (softball) have been named winners of the 2008 Diamond Award, the University's Division of Student Affairs announced on Wednesday.
The pair is listed among 25 Temple students who received the highest recognition given to a Temple University undergraduate student, reserved for those who have demonstrated superior leadership, academic achievement, service to the University, and impact on a community (local, regional, or global). Through their leadership, the winners are set apart from others as especially deserving of this unique honor.
A native of London, Ont., Borrows is a senior with a double major in accounting and management information systems. During her time at Temple, she has maintained over a 3.67 every semester, and she will graduate with highest honors. A member of the Beta Gamma Sigma International Honor Society and a three-time member of the Philadelphia Big 5 All-Academic Team, Borrows was named to the Atlantic-10 All-Academic Team and to the Atlantic-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll twice. A recipient of the Temple Owl Club Academic Award, Borrows has worked as a counselor for the Dawn Staley Basketball Academy and has also volunteered at the Temple University Children's Hospital.
Borrows holds the distinction as one of four players to never lose a Big 5 game. She helped Temple to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and two Atlantic 10 championships.
Borrows has already accepted a position as an accountant in Deloitte & Touche's Enterprise Risk Service Division in London, Ont.
A native of Wheatland, Calif., Norene is a junior and the president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She also serves as Temple's representative to the Atlantic 10 Conference where she organizes associated activities. Additionally, her family has put together Team PEEK, an organization she helps to raise money for pancreatic cancer research. As an active participant in the Physical and Health Education Teacher Education (PHETE) program, Norene participates in various community service events. She is also an annual Relay for Life participant, helping to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Furthermore, she is active in all softball community service and fundraising efforts, including "Making the Strides" Cancer Walk, donating money and toys to the women's shelter, community trash pick-up, and Katie at the Bat functions.
This season the junior, who plays first base, became Temple's all-time home run hitter with 22 homers in her career to date.
