PHILADELPHIA - Joe DiPietro, who spent the last six seasons as the head softball coach at La Salle University, has been named the head softball coach at Temple University, Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw announced today. DiPietro is also an assistant coach for the Philadelphia Force of the National Pro Fastpitch League.
"We are excited to be able to lure a veteran coach who not only knows the region, but also the Atlantic 10 Conference," Bradshaw said. "Joe has a great softball mind and his ability to recruit high level talent should reinvigorate the Temple softball program."
In his six seasons with the Explorers, DiPietro guided his charges to 77 wins, with the 2008 squad posting the most victories (22) since 1997. La Salle ended the 2008 campaign on a high note, sweeping Fordham for the first time since 1997, and recording a 22-24 mark, 8-12 in league play.
"I'm excited to begin coaching at Temple," DiPietro said. "I had six wonderful years at La Salle and I am thankful for the opportunity they gave me to coach at the Division I level. There is a ton of talent here at Temple and we are looking to win right away. I can't wait to get started."
Prior to La Salle, DiPietro served 25 seasons as a softball coach at Camden Catholic, spending the last 15 as the head coach. During his tenure, DiPietro amassed a 274-98 record, and led the Irish to three New Jersey State Championships. His 1991 and 1992 squads were voted the area's top-ranked team by both the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Courier-Post.
DiPietro, who graduated from Gloucester County College and Camden Catholic, has also coached the South Jersey Hurricanes Amateur Softball Association 18-and-under tournament team and the All-Star Trophies ASA Class A tournament team. He resides in Mount Laurel, NJ, with his wife, Terry, and their daughter, Katie.
