PHILADELPHIA - The Temple University football team opened training camp today on a sunny afternoon at Edberg-Olson Hall.
The coaching staff and squad of 104 players took to the field for the first time this fall, just 26 days from the first Owls' game.
Under the guidance of third-year head coach Al Golden, this season's squad returns everyone from last year except for one starter. In 2007, Temple fielded the nation's youngest team, playing 25 freshmen, including 20 true freshmen, and starting the nation's most freshmen (12). For the third consecutive year, Temple also signed the top-rated recruiting class in the MAC according to Scout.com.
Practices are closed to the general public.
Temple will open the 2008 season at Army on Friday, August 29. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. before a national television audience on ESPN Classic. The Owls host Connecticut on Sept. 6 at Noon on ESPNU at Lincoln Financial Field in their home opener.

Al Golden Quotes
On QB Adam DiMichele:
"He's doing well. We'll have to watch him just to see how he does with long running. We have goals when we come in, and we have bowl goals when we come in terms of running, competition, weight lifting, etc. And Adam made all of his bowl goals in running, and not every player can obviously do that. He's just one of those guys that is physically and mentally tough. I'm excited about the way he looks right now."
On C Alex Derenthal and the offensive line:
"(Alex) has a secured spot. We've been pleased with the direction that Devin Tyler has gone since the spring. Devin's now the starter at left tackle. Those two right now are the starters today. Alex is the only one that has a spot that's his. At the same time, we're going to be working both Chris Tremel and Wayne Tribue behind Alex to create some depth and start with some transition as part as an understudy. I'd have to say the rest of it is wide open."
