PHILADELPHIA-The Temple volleyball team ended its three-match losing skid with a resounding, 3-2 (23-25, 25-19, 25-22, 17-25, 15-6), win over the visiting Princeton Tigers on Wednesday night. The Owls posted a season-high 17 team blocks, including 12 in games one and two, while the Tigers had just five.
Jacqueline Cowden led the charge with 13 kills and 10 blocks, while Yun Yi Zhang posted a match-high 16 kills and seven blocks. Cayleigh Ashman had 12 kills and seven blocks and Ashley Carr rounded out the double figure kills leaders with 10. Caitlin Loudon and Ariel Pierre came up big on the defensive end, contributing 19 and 22 digs, respectively. Jackie Morrison dished a team-high 54 assists.
Princeton took an early lead in set one and, though the Owls hung tough, they could not seem to get any closer than two points. A six-point run tied the set at 23 but the Cherry and White committed two straight mistakes to give the Tigers the game, 25-23.
The Owls were much more dominant in set two, never allowing the visitors to get closer than three points on their way to the 25-19 victory. In set three, Princeton came aggressively out of the gates and though the Owls tried to pull away, refused to back down. Despite a late three-point run, the Tigers could not get over the hump and Temple took set three, 25-22.
Temple came out flat in game four, getting behind early. A late 8-3 Tiger run gave Princeton a 25-17 win and sent the match to a fifth and final set.
The Owls made quick work of Princeton, jumping out to a 12-3 lead and never looking back.
The Owls travel to Connecticut this weekend to take on UConn, Maine and Cornell in the UConn Tournament, Sept. 19 and 20.
