Senkina, Steiner Lead Owls On First Day Of Cornell Invitational

ITHACA, NY - Senior Dina Senkina and junior Elyse Steiner enjoyed banner days on Friday at the season-opening Cornell Invitational. The pair teamed to reach the Flight A semifinals in doubles and each won a singles match to advance to the Flight A quarterfinals. Action resumes on Saturday morning from Ithaca, NY.
"Our team gave a very strong effort," first-year women's head coach Steve Mauro said. "I was very happy with it in our first action of the season.
After receiving an opening round bye, Senkina-Steiner defeated St. Bonaventure's Delgado/Barousse, 8-5. In singles, Senkina, the defending Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, beaet St. Bonaventure's Marin, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, while Steiner defeated Colgate's Inacker, 6-4, 6-1.
Also in Flight A singles, sophomore Lucie Pazderova fell to Binghamton's Bates, 6-2, 6-4. In Flight B singles, sophomore Josephine Bergmann defeated Lehigh's Picitelli, 6-2, 6-1, while junior Anastasiia Rukavyshnykova was a 6-0, 6-2 victor over Colgate's Bender.
In Flight A doubles, junior Christine Clermont and Rukavyshnykova won 8-3 over Cohen and Schwartz of Lehigh before falling 8-4 to Cornell's Dumitrescu and Chis.
In Flight B doubles, sophomore Theresa Stangl and Pazderova won 8-3 over Reich and Vityuk of Lehigh to advance to the semifinals.
