PHILADELPHIA-Junior Yun Yi Zhang continued her stellar play, posting a match-high 24 kills and just two errors, to lead the Temple volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Rhode Island (23-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-22) on Saturday afternoon. The Owls improve to 8-6 overall, 1-0 in the A-10, while the Rams fall to 6-8 and 0-2 in the Conference.
Ariel Pierre had 28 digs to lead the Owl defensive effort, while Jacqueline Cowden stopped five Ram attacks. Jackie Morrison dished 50 assists.
Rhode Island was able to squeak by Temple in set one, 25-23, but the Owls strong play for the remainder of the match, gave the home team its second straight victory.
Temple dominated set two, leading by as many as 12 points en route to the 25-17 win. The Cherry and White had nearly a .420 hitting percentage for 18 kills, double the amount earned by the Rams.
TU performed well in sets three and four, though Rhode Island refused to go quietly and mounted comebacks late in each set. The Owls were too strong, however, behind play by Zhang and Pierre and took the match 3-1.
The Owls return to action tomorrow against Fordham at 12 p.m. in McGonigle Hall.
