THIS WEEK
Temple packs its bags yet again, this time traveling to Miami (Ohio) on Saturday, Oct. 4. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at Yager Stadium.
The game will be televised in the state of Ohio only on Ohio News Now with Tim Bray handling play-by-play duties, and Neil Dougherty on color commentary. The Owls' radio broadcast will air on WNTP 990 AM with Harry Donahue calling the play-by-play and Steve Joachim providing color analysis. Live gametracker stats and audio streaming will be available on the Temple Athletics website at www.owlsports.com.
Under the direction of third-year head coach Al Golden, Temple stands 1-4 overall and 0-2 in Mid-American Conference play. The Owls fell to Western Michigan, 7-3, last week at home during Homecoming.
Returning 20 seniors and 26 juniors, Temple returns 21 starters this season and the top defense in the MAC. Senior WR Travis Shelton (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) is the Owls' top receiver with 16 catches for 190 yards and three touchdowns. Freshman RB Joe Jones (Davie,Fla.) leads the Owl rushers with 125 yards and a touchdown on 43 carries. Redshirt senior QB Adam DiMichele (McKees Rocks, Pa.) has completed 51-of-85 for 620 yards and five touchdowns. Redshirt freshman Chester Stewart (Hanover, Md.) follows, going 27-of-51 for 183 yards in three games. Defensively, sophomore DB Jaiquawn Jarrett (Brooklyn, N.Y.) has 35 tackles and a team-best two fumble recoveries. The Owls will utilize their East Coast offense and 4-3 defense.
The game at Miami is Temple's fourth road game and first-ever trip to Oxford. The Owls will play four of their next five games on the road. Temple will not be home again for 24 days. The next home game, the only October home date-- is Tuesday, Oct. 21 vs. Ohio.
Under the guidance of fourth-year head coach Shane Montgomery, the RedHawks stand 1-3 overall and 0-0 in the MAC after a 45-20 loss at Cincinnati on Sept. 17. Miami had a bye last week leading up to its MAC opener with Temple. MU returns 24 starters to its multiple offense and 4-3 defense.
Sophomore RB Thomas Merriweather is the top rusher with 260 yards and three touchdowns on 74 carries. Redshirt junior QB Daniel Raudabaugh is 86-of-146 for 975 yards and four touchdowns in four games. Sophomore WR Jamal Rogers leads all receivers with 151 yards on 17 receptions. Defensively, senior LB Joey Hudson has 39 tackles and five sacks.
Miami is Temple's first opponent from the state of Ohio this season. The Owls will also play Ohio, Kent State, and Akron in MAC games this fall.
Temple has no players on its roster from the state of Ohio. Miami has four players from Pennsylvania, but only one from the Philadelphia area-- freshman TE Trevor Behmke (Paoli,Pa. / Conestoga HS).
TEMPLE-MIAMI-- THE SERIES
Saturday's game will mark the third meeting between the Owls and the RedHawks. While Temple has sponsored football since 1894 and Miami has fielded a team since 1888, the teams have met just twice, both times in Philadelphia. On Oct. 29, 2005, Miami claimed a 41-14 win at Lincoln Financial Field. The game was the Owls' final home game of the 2005 campaign and the last under eight-year head coach Bobby Wallace.
Last fall at Lincoln Financial Field, Temple evened the series with a 24-17 win under Al Golden before its Homecoming crowd. TU withstood a late Miami rally to hang on for its third consecutive victory. The win marked the first time that Temple had won three consecutive conference games since 1967 when Temple competed in the Middle Atlantic Conference. The win also marked the first time the Owls had won three consecutive games in a season since 1990.
The victory, however, came with a huge price tag. Starting QB Adam DiMichele suffered a broken leg early in the second quarter following a sack and missed the rest of the season.
