Three-goal second half propels Owls to first A-10 win

Ambler, PA - The Temple women's soccer team (5-8-1, 1-5-0 in A-10) hosted Duquesne (3-9-0, 0-5-0 in A-10) on Sunday afternoon at the Ambler Sports Complex. Both teams were looking for their first conference win of the season and it showed as each team played with grit and determination. However, it was TU's Niki Conn who had the final tally in the Owls' 3-2 victory.

The Owl's played a strong first half, with shots by forwards Kelly Diviny and Steph Ferretti drilling the crossbar. It wasn't until Duquesne's Morgan Herbert received a pass from forward Shaina Geisler and took a shot from 20 yards out that rattled the goal at 11:01 into the game. The Owl's entered halftime down 1-0, but outshooting the Dukes 10-8.

Duquesne seemed to put a strangle hold on the Owl's when Kristin Vinicky hoisted a laser free kick from 30 yards out into the upper portion of the goal increasing the Duke's lead to 2-0.

The Owls responded a minute later at 69:26, when freshman Kate Yurkovic deflected a header past Duke goalkeeper Gabby Morrin. Sophomores Tiia Kuokka and Samantha Farlow were each awarded the assist on Yurkovic's goal.

With the lead down to one goal and time running out, sophomore Allicia Yurkovic tied the game on a great head ball off of a cross from Niki Conn, beating the goalie near post.

Five minutes later at 85:07, junior Meredith Crowell made a piercing run through the midfield and fed a beautiful pass onto the right foot of Conn, who slotted it far post from 18 yards out giving the Owl's the lead for good at 3-2. It was Conn's team-leading eighth goal of the season.

“It's a great feeling getting the win,” commented Owls' head coach David Jones. “We did the same thing we haveve done the past two weekends and got down early, but we showed what we are made of and fought back. We decided before the game that we weren't going to lose 2-1, and it is a credit to the kids on the field. They fought hard and came back.”

Temple out-shot Duquesne 20-15 in the contest, picking up their first conference victory of the season. Freshman Gillian Kacsuta had 4 saves for the Owls.

The Cherry and White hit the road before returning home on October 23rd at 3pm to host conference foe Charlotte.
