K. Yurkovic Nets Game-Winner To Push Women's Soccer Past Saint Louis On Senior Day

Freshman tallied her third goal of the season late in second half
Ambler, PA – The Temple women's soccer (6-11-1, 2-8-0 in A-10)) team wanted nothing more than to send senior team captain Carly Metzger out with a win on Senior Day, and they did just that. Freshman Kate Yurkovic tapped in a rebound in the 85th minute to give TU a 1-0 win over Saint Louis (8-7-3, 5-3-2 in A-10), Sunday afternoon at Ambler Sports Complex.
The first half was full of back and forth action. Saint Louis held a slight shot advantage in the first half 11-8, but freshman goalkeeper Gillian Kacsuta was up to the task, recording five saves to keep the game scoreless.
Defense was the key to the second half, and the Owls had plenty of it as they held the Billikens to just four shots. With less than five minutes remaining in the game, freshman defender Jackie Krostec got forward and launched a shot from 20-yards out that hit the crossbar. The ball then bounced onto the right foot of Yurkovic who pounded the ball into the back of the net, giving the Owl's a 1-0 lead for good. The assist was Krostec's second of the season, while it was Yurkovic third career goal.
“I thought we played well and I thought we held on in the first half,” commented head coach David Jones. “We really shut them down and limited their chances. It was senior day, and we wanted to do it for Carly. I am proud of everyone for stepping up and accepting that challenge, and I am glad we came out with a win.”
Saint Louis was no match for an energized Temple team, with the Owls continually pressuring the Billikens defense, and eventually out-shooting their foe 15-12.
Although two freshmen had a helping hand in the lone goal of the game, the day belonged to Metzger, who led a stifling defense in the final home game of her career.
The Cherry and White conclude their season away at Saint Joseph's on Saturday October 31st at 7:00 p.m.
