Spurred by a significant increase in participation through the first four months of the 2009-10 fiscal year, the Temple University athletics development office announced a new Owl Club membership goal Wednesday.
The goal of the initiative, named “2,500 for 25,” is for the Owl Club to reach 2,500 individual members by June 30, 2010, the conclusion of the 25th anniversary of the official fundraising arm of Temple Athletics.
“Our athletics program has a number of important major projects ahead of us, including facility enhancements and upgrades that will take leadership-level private resources to accomplish,” said Bill Bradshaw, director of intercollegiate athletics. “However, the '2,500 for 25' initiative is vital to our well-being. Temple Owl Club members provide critical annual gifts that help each of our teams with critical operating dollars, as well as the Unrestricted funds which allow our entire program to serve our student-athletes most effectively.”
The Temple Owl Club closed the 2008-09 fiscal year with 1,962 donors. Support at the $100 level or above of a specific Temple team, or of the Athletics Unrestricted fund, constitutes Owl Club membership. Total membership has fluctuated between 1,650 and 2,150 members since the beginning of the decade.
“Broad participation by fellow Owls everywhere, and our providing premier service to them, is our highest priority,” Associate Athletics Director for Development Scott Koskoski said. “Economic circumstances have created financial challenges which can be offset by significant growth of our donor program. We will continue to motivate our current Owl Club donors to raise their commitment to Temple Athletics, but emphasize broad participation through the addition of new members.”
As of November 10, Owl Club membership numbered 809 members, an increase of 233 donors from the same time a year ago.
“Sometimes folks will tell me, 'I'd give, but I am not asked,'” said Owl Club Executive Board President Joe Morelli. “As clearly as we can make this: We need your annual support now. It's not possible to reach each of our more than 250,000 living alumni with an in-person ask. Many Owls live outside the Philadelphia area and Northeast; a financial contribution to the Owl Club is a wonderful way to stay engaged and show support of our successful athletics program,” Morelli said.
The “2,500 for 25” initiative will be supported in a number of ways, including:
• A commitment of better education of Temple's fan and donor base via the addition of TempleOwlClub.com, a new and streamlined athletics development website
• Increased use of electronic communication, including use of social media and networking, with athletics donors and prospective supporters
• Outreach and special events to increase the identification and participation of key constituent groups such as young alumni and former student-athletes
• Greater emphasis on electronic giving, convenience giving and employee payroll deduction
• Strengthened commitment to small-group, peer-to-peer fundraising, including the re-launch of athletics “Huddles” featuring Temple coaches and administrators hosted by donors
“We are not asking current and prospective donors to support Temple Athletics beyond their means,” Koskoski said. “We have thousands of addressable contacts in our database. If each of our alumni and friends joined the Owl Club at a level appropriate and comfortable for them, without unduly affecting their daily needs, then Temple Athletics would be blessed with the strong donor base needed to most effectively pursue Comprehensive Excellence in all its forms.”
Those interested in becoming a Temple Owl Club member at the $100 “Owl” level or above may do so via a variety of methods. Temple's online giving portal is located at www.MyOwlSpace.com and coming in November, the addition of TempleOwlClub.com will provide additional education and ease. Gifts may be made over the phone by calling the athletics development office at (215) 204-CLUB (2582) or by sending a contribution directly to the Owl Club at 1700 North Broad St., 4th Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19122.
“If you are a current Owl Club donor, we thank you for your loyalty and support and ask you to continue raising the bar as you are able,” Bradshaw said. “For those yet to join the Owl Club, please consider the immediate and direct impact you are making for our athletics program. Because of your help, we can achieve our vision of regularly fielding championship teams, providing our student-athletes with life-transforming opportunities and representing excellence for your university.”
