Temple improves to 2-0 with home win over 2009 SEC champs

PHILADELPHIA – Junior Shaqwedia Wallace scored 19 points to lead the Temple women's basketball team to a 66-52 win against Auburn, improving the Owls' record to 2-0. The Tigers, reigning champs of the SEC, now stand at 1-1 overall.
Every player that entered the game scored for Temple, with sophomore Kristen McCarthy adding 10 points and freshman Natasha Thames nearly notching her first career double-double with nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
The battle of the boards went to Temple as the Owls out-rebounded Auburn, 45-31. Both teams were guilty of committing a lot of turnovers as Auburn had 23 and Temple had 22, but the Owls capitalized on the Tigers' mistakes, finishing with a 33-19 edge in points off turnovers.
Shooting 43 percent in the first half compared to 26 percent by Auburn, Temple trailed at 2-1 but never again in the contest. The Owls' first double-digit lead came at 21-10 with 8:20 remaining in the first half, and they went on to lead 34-15 at the break.
Temple's largest lead of 21 points came after the first bucket of the second half. Auburn's shots began to fall as the Tigers rallied to eventually come within nine at the 8:54 mark, but they would get no closer the rest of the way.
Alli Smalley led Auburn with 19 points, and KeKe Carrier came off the bench to score 12 for the Tigers.
Wallace added a game-high four steals and three assists to her 19-point performance, and senior LaKeisha Eaddy dished out a team-high four assists for Temple. Junior Marli Bennett went 4-for-5 from the field to finish with eight points, also grabbing seven boards.
Temple will play on the road later this week for the first time, heading to Dartmouth for a 7:00 p.m. contest on Thursday, Nov. 19, and to Buffalo for a 2:00 p.m. game on Saturday.
