Box Score
DAYTON, Ohio – The Temple volleyball team has advanced to the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament after rallying for an exciting, 3-2 win over George Washington by scores of 17-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-16 and 15-10. The Owls will face A-10 regular season champ Dayton in their next match at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21.
Temple and George Washington had each swept the other team 3-0 on their home courts this season, but it was GW to do it most recently and Temple who got revenge in the third meeting. The Owls now stand at 14-11 overall while GW finishes the season at 21-12.
“I'm so impressed with the character of this team, the way they kept fighting back and never gave up,” said head coach Bob Bertucci, who has taken Temple teams to the tournament in each of the last 14 years.
Yun Yi Zhang, a 2009 A-10 First Team selection, led all players in the match with 29 kills while Cayleigh Ashman knocked down 10 kills for Temple. Jackie Morrison notched a double-double of 49 assists and 12 digs, and Ariel Pierre led all players with 23 digs.
“Ariel played tremendous for us tonight,” said Bertucci. “It was probably her best match of the year.”
After a 4-4 tie in the first set, GW went on to lead the rest of the way, finishing the set with 19 team kills to Temple's 13.
A furious back-and-forth second set saw 21 ties and each team tally 14 kills, but after the final tie at 23-23, Jovana Radojevic and Ashman each knocked down a kill to put the Owls back in the match, tying the sets at one apiece.
The third set was similar to the first with the Colonials leading throughout, recording seven more kills than Temple to take a 2-1 match lead. But again the Owls battled, serving up five aces and notching four more kills than GW to easily take the fourth set. Ashman was key in the final stretch, knocking down three kills in the final four points.
Temple took a 4-0 lead to start the fifth and final set and never looked back, winning 15-10.
