Owls look to rebound from tough loss to St. John's

PHILADELPHIA - Temple plays the second of its five-game Mid-American Conference schedule Tuesday night (7:00 p.m./1210 AM WPHT) when the Owls travel to Kalamazoo, Michigan to take on the Western Michigan Broncos. The Cherry and White (4-2) will be looking to rebound from Saturday's 55-48 loss to St. John's in the final of the Philly Hoop Group Classic while the Broncos (2-2) are coming off a 64-54 win over Holy Cross.
Defense has led the way for fourth-year Temple head coach Fran Dunphy. The Owls have held five of their six opponents to 56 points or less. Temple's scoring defense of 53.7 points per game tops the Atlantic 10 Conference while its three-point field goal percentage defense (.225) also leads the league.
Senior guard Ryan Brooks (13.0 ppg.) continues to pace a balanced Owls offensive attack with a 13.0 scoring average. Junior forward Lavoy Allen (12.0 ppg.) leads TU and ranks fifth in the A-10 with a 9.8 rebound average. Sophomore guard Juan Fernandez (10.8 ppg.) tops the team in assists (3.8 apg.) and is the Owls' top perimeter threat (11-27, .407).
Senior guard David Kool, the 2009 MAC scoring leader, tops the Bronco attack with an 18.8 scoring average. Seventh-year head coach Steve Hawkins squad also boasts two other double-figure scorers in senior swingman Martelle McLemore (14.8 ppg.) and sophomore forward Flenard Whitfield (10.5 ppg.). Senior center Donald Lawson (9.8 ppg.) leads WMU in rebounding at 7.5 boards per game.
This is the third meeting between Temple and Western Michigan. The Owls defeated the Broncos, 76-71, at the Liacouras Center on December 5, 2006. The previous meeting, also a TU win (55-51), came on February 26, 1944 in Philadelphia.
