Temple Faces UCLA in EagleBank Bowl on Dec. 29
PHILADELPHIA – Three Temple Owls were named 2009 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Football Bowl Subdivision All-Stars on Wednesday.
Freshman running back Bernard Pierce (Ardmore, Pa.), junior linebacker Elijah “Peanut” Joseph (Hartford, Conn.), and sophomore kickoff returner James Nixon (New Haven, Conn.) earned All-Star recognition.
All-American Pierce set the freshman records for yards (1,308), touchdowns (15), and 100-yard rushing games (6). He needs just one touchdown to set the single-season records for TDs and points scored. Named the team's inaugural Newcomer of the Year, Pierce earned Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Year and first team All-MAC honors this fall.
A first team All-MAC performer, Joseph is fourth in team tackles with 56. He also has two sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception. Joseph was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 28. He also earned National Performer of the Week honors.
Nixon was named the team's 2009 Special Teams Player of the Year. A second-team All-MAC honoree, Nixon is Temple's top kick returner with 497 yards and two touchdowns on 17 returns. He became the first player in school history to score a KOR touchdown in consecutive games. He ranks No. 10 nationally with 29.24 yards per return. Nixon was named the National Performer of the Week twice as kickoff returner.
Additionally, thanks to Temple fans who voted online, head coach Al Golden was named a Top 10 finalist for the 2009 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year, which honors college coaches who demonstrate responsibility and excellence on and off the field.
Beginning today, Temple fans can vote daily, through December 29, at www.coachoftheyear.com. Fan votes constitute 20 percent of a coach's final score. If he wins, Liberty Mutual will award Coach Golden $50,000 to donate to the charity of his choice and a $20,000 grant to donate to the Temple University Alumni Association for student scholarships and activities.
Once final votes are cast, the four winning coaches – one from each NCAA division – will be announced at a media lunch reception on January 6 in Newport Beach, Calif., in advance of the next day's BCS National Championship Game.

In his fourth year at Temple, Golden has guided the Owls to a 9-3 record, including a record nine consecutive wins, and a 7-1 record in Mid-American Conference play. During his tenure, Golden has revamped the football program from top to bottom, on and off the field. In 2006 and 2007, he fielded the youngest teams in the nation. He was also a finalist for the Maxwell Club's 2009 George Munger College Coach of the Year Award, as well as a candidate for the Paul “Bear” Bryant College Football Coach of the Year Award.
Temple (9-3, 7-1 MAC) will play UCLA (6-6, 3-5 Pac-10) in the EagleBank Bowl on Dec. 29 at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. It's the Owls' first bowl appearance in 30 years.
