Owls Beat Four-Time Patriot League Champ Army, 5-2, For First Win

WEST POINT, NY - Temple picked up its first win of the season by beating Army, the four-time defending Patriot League champions, 5-2, on Saturday in West Point, NY. Sophomore Josephine Bergman had the deciding victory at fifth singles by defeating Caitlin Finngan, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3). The Owls will take on St. John's on Sunday in West Point.
"Today was a great win," head coach Steve Mauro said. "Army is a very strong team and we were happy to play so well. We hope to keep the momentum going tomorrow."
The Cherry and White (1-2) won the doubles point by winning at second and third doubles. Juniors Christine Clermont and Elyse Steiner won 8-6 over Kristin Beehler and Birdie Burke at #2, while sophomores Lucie Pazderova and Theresa Stangl beat Finnegan and Anne Houghton, 8-4, at #3.
The Owls captured the final four singles spots, led by Bergman's decisive victory at #5. Pazderova had little trouble with Sarah Giles-Madden, winning 6-0, 6-1 at #3, while Clermont beat Beehler, 7-5, 6-1 at #4. Senior Felicia Frazier beat Michael Tollerton, 7-6 (7-2), 7-5, at sixth singles.
Army falls to 1-6.
