Women's Tennis Defeats St. John's, 5-2

WEST POINT, NY - Temple swept the doubles matches and added four singles wins to capture its second straight victory by beating St. John's, 5-2, on Sunday at Army's Lichtenberg Tennis Center. Junior Christine Clermont and sophomore Lucie Pazderova won both of their matches on Sunday to remain undefeated for the weekend.
"It was another good win for our team," head coach Steve Mauro said. "We were missing one our starters in Anastasiia Rukavyshnykova and it was great to see other players step up and get some wins."
The Owls (2-2) opened by sweeping the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Josephine Bergman and senior Felicia Frazier teamed up to beat Nakita Austin and Jenny Yonkus, 8-4 at first doubles, while Clermont and junior Elyse Steiner won 8-0 over Ira Aleksova and Ksenia Mikhaylova at #2. Pazderova and sophomore Theresa Stangl finished the sweep with an 8-1 win over Gabija Gasiunaite and Alyssa Liantonio at third doubles.
Steiner picked up a straight-set victory at first singles with a 6-0,6-3 win over Mikhaylova. Pazderova followed at #3 with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Joanna Zwirbulis and Clermont won 6-0, 6-2 over Austin at #4. Clermont is now 9-2 this season, including 3-1 at fifth singles this spring.
Bergman won in a third-set tiebreaker over Yonkus, 3-6, 6-1, 10-2 at fifth singles to improve to 7-3 this season and 2-0 in the spring.
St. John's falls to 1-4.
The Owls return home to host Drexel at noon on Friday at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center. It is part of a doubleheader with the Dragons as the Temple men will also play DU at noon.
