PHILADELPHIA - Temple handed previously undefeated Drexel its first loss of the season by beating the Dragons, 5-1, on Friday afternoon at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center. The defending Atlantic 10 champions have now won three straight matches since dropping the first two of the season.
The Cherry and White (3-2) won the doubles point by capturing wins at second and third doubles. Sophomores Lucie Pazderova and Theresa Stangl won at #2 over Emily and Melissa Lewis, 8-3, for their seventh straight win. Juniors Christine Clermont and Elyse Steiner, won 8-2 over Elise Leizerovich/Anahita Jagtiani.
Temple made quick work of the Dragons (9-1) in singles, enabling the sixth singles match to be skipped. Steiner, normally the Owls' top singles player, only played doubles, moving each player up in the lineup.
Pazderova, the reigning A-10 Player of the Week, had no trouble adjusting to playing second singles, beating Gozde Unkaya, 1-6, 6-0, 6-0. Junior Anastasiia Rukavyshnykova won 6-3, 6-2 at third singles over Anahita Jagtiani, while Clermont took home a 6-0, 6-2 win over Sonja Stosic. Clermont has now won seven straight singles matches to improve to 10-2.
Sophomore Josephine Bergman captured a 8-5 pro-set win over Emily Lewis to finish off the scoring.
Temple travels to Old Dominion on Saturday. The match will begin at 11 AM.
