PHILADELPHIA - Junior Jessica Colucci neted a career-high 13 saves in goal and six different Owls added a goal, but it was not enough as the Temple women's lacrosse team dropped a hard-fought battle with visiting Cal 8-6 from a cold and blistery Geasey Field on Sunday afternoon.
Juniors Britteny Hoffman, Chelsea Rosiek, Lindsey Colerai and freshmen Jacqueline Mercer, Melissa Schweitzer and Kelsey Zenuk all scored one goal apiece to lead the balanced offensive attack. Schwietzer and Rosiek also added an assist each.
Despite playing in frigid Philadelphia, the cold weather seemed to have little effect on visiting Cal (3-3). With game netted 4-4 at the half, the Golden Bears took control of the game with a flurry of goals to open the half.
Cal's Vail Horn opened up the scoring with a free position goal at the 28:12, giving the Golden Bears the lead at 5-4. After the teams traded possessions, Cal's Emily Abbood circled the net and snuck one past Colucci to extend the Cal lead to 6-4with 21:24 left in the game.
The Owls had an answer just two minutes later, as Schweitzer's goal with 19:43 cut the lead to 6-5. But the dagger from the Bears came just one minute later, as Sam Price would score for Cal, extending the lead to 7-5.
Temple's Hoffman would add a late goal with :15 seconds remaining, but it was too little, too late, as the Golden Bears prevailed for the 8-6 win.
Alex Tickner lead the Golden Bear scoring attack with three goals in the first half.
The Cherry and White owned the ground, winning the groundball advantage 12-8.
The Owls close out their three-game home-stand when they face Binghamton on Friday. Action is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
