FRESNO, Calif. - Senior Katie Burdeaux and freshman Sarah Reynolds both pitched masterfully, but like the previous games on the Owls’ nine–game West Coast swing, the offense struggled to get anything going at the plate, as the Owls dropped a pair of games to No. 21 Fresno State, 1-0 and 3-0, on Tuesday night.
In the first game, Burdeaux (1-4) was tough-luck loser for the Cherry and White once again. Burdeaux didn’t allow an earned in six innings – limiting the ranked Bulldogs to just three hits with four strikeouts – but still took the loss when Fresno St. was able to push the winning run across home plate without a hit.
On the road trip, Burdeaux has pitched 21.5 innings in three starts with an ERA of just .084 – with three losses to show for it.
It was more of the same in the second game, as Reynolds allowed just three runs, but the Owls were unable to light up the scoreboard.
The Bulldogs broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth when Fresno State’s Caitlin Stiglich – who finished the game 3-for-5 – singled to centerfield. The Bulldogs would add two more runs in the sixth behind Kaitlin Griffin two-RBI triple.
In the first game, Bulldog sophomore ace Morgan Melloh pitched a complete game shutout for her eighth win of the season, striking out 10 and allowing just three hits.
In the second game, Fresno’s Mackenzie Oakes allowed just one hit for the win.
Junior Michelle Lerner, sophomore Chelsea Reicher and Burdueax all hit safely for the Cherry and White in the first game.
Senior Courtney Norene added the Owls’ only hit in the second game
The Owls conclude their West Coast road swing with a doubleheader with Cal-Bakersfield tonight. Play begins at 6:00 p.m. ET.
