BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Temple softball team wrapped up a season-long nine-game road trip on the West Coast by dropping a pair of games to Cal-Bakersfield, 4-3 and 11-1 on Tuesday night.
In the first game, it was yet another heartbreaking, one-run loss for the Cherry and White.
The Owls (1-13) took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs on hits by junior Michelle Lerner and junior Krystle Metzler. But after the Roadrunners tied the game in the fifth inning, they took the lead for good in the sixth, as CSB’s pitch-hitter (and starting pitcher) Brittany Johnson knocked in the game-winning double off of freshman Sarah Reynolds.
Johnson came back on the mound for the Roadrunners in the top of the seventh to close out the Owls with a 1-2-3 inning.
Senior Courtney Norene added an RBI single in the fourth inning for the Cherry and White.
Senior Katie Burdeaux (1-5) suffered another tough loss for the Owls, allowing three earned runs in 4.0 innings of work. Reynolds worked 2.0 innings in relief, allowing one run.
In the second game, the Roadrunner bats came alive, en route to an 11-1 win in five innings.
Senior Amanda Carver led the game off with a single and was driven home by Norene’s RBI double two batters later, giving the Owls the early 1-0 lead.
But the lead would be short-lived, as the Roadrunners responded with five runs in the bottom half of the first.
Freshman Lauren Spoo (0-5) took the loss for the Owls. Sophomore Amanda Branco and Reynolds both worked in relief.
The road weary Owls will get a week of rest before their home opener against Marist on Wednesday, March 18. Play is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
