AMBLER Pa. - Courtney Norene belted a two-run home run and senior Katie Burdeaux sparked a two-run rally in bottom of the sixth inning as the Temple softball team snapped its long losing skid with 4-3 victory over Wagner in the second game of the doubleheader Tuesday afternoon from the Ambler Sports Complex.. The Seahawks took the first game 4-2.
With the win, the Owls (2-18, 0-2)) snap one of the longest losing streaks in program history, and pick up their first win since a season-opening victory over Georgetown.
Down 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning of the second game, Norene smacked her second home run of the season - 24th in her record-setting career - over the left-field fence to tie the game at 2-2.
After the Seahawks (7-15) took back the lead at 3-2 in the top of the fourth inning, the Cherry and White stormed back in the bottom of the sixth to end the skid. Norene led the rally off with a single into left field. After pinch-runner Chelsea Reicher advanced to second base on a past ball, Burdeaux singled up the middle and Wagner centerfielder Erin Pierce let the ball skip between her legs, allowing Reicher to score, tying the game at 3-3.
Pinch-running for Burdeaux, it was the base running of freshman Christine Schlichter that put the Owls ahead for good. She advanced to second base on a past ball and was able to tag up to third base when Nichole Lee flied out to deep right. And with junior Michelle Lerner at the plate, Schlichter would score the go-ahead run when ball four to Lerner got past Wagner catcher.
Freshman Sarah Reynolds (1-3) would close out the seventh for the win, the first win of her collegiate career. She pitched all seven innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out two.
In the first game, the Seahawks used a three-run home run by Heather Corthell to spark a four-run second inning, and pitcher Kaelynn Armenta held off a late Cherry and White rally for the 4-2 win.
The Owls got on the board in the fifth inning when, after stealing second and third, Amanda Carver was knocked home by a Christina Sykora single to cut the lead to 4-1.
The Owls would add another run in the bottom of the seventh when a Carver single scored Chante Pleydle to trim the lead to 4-2.The late charge ended, however, on the very next play, when Sykora struck out with Pleydle on second base.
Burdeaux took the loss for the Cherry and White, pitching seven innings and striking out three.
The Owls return to Ambler on Friday for a conference battle with Charlotte. Play is scheduled for 3:00 p.m
