PHILADELPHIA- Brittney Hoffman scored three goals to lead Temple (0-9, 0-2 A-10) but was not enough as the Owl women's lacrosse team was edged, 9-7, by the La Salle Explorers (4-5, 1-1 A-10) on Sunday afternoon. The Owls attempted a second-half comeback, outshooting the Explorers 18-6 in the stanza, but could not close the gap.
Kelsey Zenuk had one goal and one assist for the Cherry and White, while Keelin Hood, Jacqueline Mercer and Melissa Schweitzer all added one tally. Alison Incarnato and Chelsea Rosiek each dished one assist.
Zenuk got Temple started almost instantly, scoring an unassisted goal just 40 seconds into the contest. That would be the only lead of the game for Temple, however, as La Salle answered with a two-goal run to make it 2-1 with just over 20 minutes remaining in the first half. The teams traded goals over the next 10 minutes until the Explorers used a two-goal run to end the half with a 5-3 result.
Mercer took a pass from Rosiek to make it a one-goal game (5-4) to begin the second stanza but that would be as close as it would be as La Salle netted four goals over the next 10 minutes to take a 9-5 advantage with 9:11 left to play. TU attempted a furious comeback attempt, with Hoffman and Schweitzer scoring back-to-back goals in the last seven minutes of the contest but it was too late as the Explorers escaped with the 9-7 victory.
Jessica Colucci had seven saves in goal for Temple, while Mara Schnellenbach stopped 11 Temple shots.
The Owls return home for a two-game homestand beginning on Friday against George Washington at 3 p.m.
