Softball Heads West, Drops Pair at Mustang Classic

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Following a 17-day layoff, the Temple women's softball team was back in action with the first two games at the Cal Poly Mustang Classic. In the second game, the Owls lost a 1-0 extra-inning heartbreaker to host Cal Poly. In the first game, the Owls fell to UC-Riverside 6-0.
Despite playing 3,000 away from home after nearly a month-long break, the Cherry and White (1-6) gave the home-standing Mustangs all they could handle. The teams played eight scoreless innings behind a fabulous pitching performance from senior Katie Burdeaux (1-2), who allowed just one run in 8.1 innings of work while striking out two.
The Mustangs scored the winning run when Stephanie Tam's two-out single in ninth scored the winning run.
Seniors Amanda Carver and Nicole Lee added the only hits for the Owls, as Cal Poly's Amanda Cahn (6-3) was dominate on the mound, striking out 10 batters in nine innings of work.
In the first game, freshman Lauren Spoo limited UC-Riverside to just one run over the first four innings, but Highlanders broke the game open with five runs on six hits in the fifth en route to the 6-0 win.
Burdueax, senior Courtney Norene and junior Rachel Knable all hit safely for the Cherry and White, but could not help the team push any runs across the board against UC-Riverside's Stephanie Meyers (1-5). Spoo took the loss (0-3), allowing five in 4.1 innings of work.
Fellow freshman Sarah Reynolds allowed one run in 2.2. innings.
The Owls return to action at the Mustang Classic tomorrow with two games, as they face Utah State at 3:00 p.m., followed by a rematch with UC-Riverside at 5:30 p.m.
