PHILADELPHIA - Binghamton broke open a tight game with nine consecutive goals to start the second half, but still needed to fend off a late Temple rally, as the women's lacrosse team fell to the Bearcats 16-11 from Geasey Field Friday afternoon.
Four freshmen anchored the Owls offense on the day. Karly Cohen scored three goals and added two assists to lead the Cherry and White (0-3). Melissa Schweitzer also netted three goals, while Keelin Hood added two goals and one assist, and Jacqueline Mercer registered a goal and assist. The Bearcats Meg Brown led all scorers with four games on the day. Lisa Illig added three goals.
Clinging to a narrow 6-5 margin to start the second half, the Bearcats offense exploded to start from the break, scoring nine consecutive goals over a 20 minutes, taking a commanding 15-5 lead with seven minutes remaining to play.
Despite the long odds, the Owls never quit, scoring six goals in the final seven minutes, including a streak of three goals in the final minute of play, to bring the Owls within a punchers chance at 16-11 with :42 second remaining. But following Temple's final goal by Schweitzer, Binghamton won draw control and ran the clock to finish the game.
Freshman Kelsey Zenuk and sophomore Nicholle St. Pierre also scored for the Cherry and White.
In goal for the Owls, junior Jess Colucci recorded six saves.
The Owls were hampered by 21 turnovers on the day.
The Cherry and White return to action on Wednesday, when they travel to Towson. Play is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
