SAN LUIS OBSIPO, Calif. - It was more tough luck for the Temple softball team on the West Coast, as the Owls (1-8) dropped a pair of one-run games, falling to Utah State 2-1 and UC-Riverside 5-4 from the Mustang Classic on Saturday afternoon.
In the first game, senior Katie Burdeaux (1-3) put on another masterful performance on the mound for the Cherry and White, but Utah State's Harris hit two solo home runs - including the go-ahead home in the fifth inning - to lead the Aggies to the 2-1 victory.
Burdeaux finished the day allowing four hits in seven innings while striking out eight.
In the Mustang Classic, Burdeaux has pitched 15.1 innings, posting a 1.77 ERA with 10 strikeouts - but with two defeats.
Senior Courtney Norene and junior Rachel Knable hit safely for the Cherry and White against Utah State.
In the rematch against UC-Riverside, the Owls finally found some offense behind sophomore Chelsea Reicher and freshman Christina Sykora, but the Highlanders held on the 5-4 win.
The Owls posted a late rally in the seventh inning as Norene's RBI sacrifice scored Reicher to cut the lead to 5-4 with two outs, but the game ended with senior Nichole Lee grounded out to end the game.
Reicher finished with two hits - including a double in the seventh - while Sykora added two singles and one RBI. Lee and freshman Samantha Schoell each added single, while junior Krystle Metzler and Schoell each added a RBI.
On the mound for the Cherry and White, freshman Sarah Reynolds pitched six innings while allowing eight hits.
The Owls close out the Mustang Classic tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. with a rematch against Cal Poly.
