Softball Falls to Cal Poly in Final Game of Mustang Classic

SAN LUIS OBSIPO, Calif. – The Temple softball team wrapped up play from the Cal Poly Mustang Classic, falling to the homestanding Mustangs 8-1 in the tournament finale.
Junior Kryslte Metzler’s RBI single in the third-inning gave the Owls (1-9) the early 1-0 lead, but the Mustangs responded in the bottom-half of the inning with two runs behind Stephanie Tam’s two-RBI double.
The Mustangs pulled ahead for good with a six run sixth-inning, fueled by two of Melissa Pura’s career-high four hits on the day.
The Mustangs were also aided by three Cherry and White errors for the game, two of which came in the deciding sixth inning.
Freshman Lauren Spoo (0-4) took the loss for the Owls, working 4.0 innings while striking out three. Sophomore Amanda Branco worked two innings in relief. Helen Peña (5-3) picked up the win for Cal Poly.
Senior Courtney Norene, senior Nichole Lee and junior Rachel Knable also added hits for the Owls.
The Cherry and White remain on the West Coast for spring break and face challenge when they travel to No. 21 Fresno State for a doubleheader this Tuesday. Action is slated to begin at 9:00 p.m. ET.
