Pittsburgh, Pa.- Temple's Brittney Hoffman and Missy Schweitzer led a furious second half comeback but it fell short, as the Owl womens lacrosse team (3-12, 2-5 A-10) dropped its final Atlantic 10 contest to Duquesne (9-8, 4-3 A-10), 13-8, on Sunday afternoon. The duo each scored three goals and notched one assist.
The Cherry and White tried desperately to erase a 10-goal halftime deficit, scoring seven second-half tallies, but could not topple a strong Dukes team. Kelsey Zenuk and Jackie Mercer chipped in with one goal a piece.
Hoffman struck first in the game with an unassisted goal at 27:34 but it was all Duquesne all the time for the remainder of the half, as the Dukes rattled off 10 straight goals to make it 11-1 at the break.
Duquesne made it 12-1 early in the second half but Temple was not about to go down quietly. Schweitzer began a three-goal TU run to make it 12-4 with just over 11 minutes remaining. The Dukes answered with a single tally at 7:35 to give them a 13-4 advantage but the Owls refused to quit. Temple, led by Schweitzer and Hoffman, had four straight to get the visitors within five goals (13-8) but that would be as close as they could get.
Jessica Colucci did an admirable job in goal for the Owls, stopping 14 of Duquesne's 40 total shots. The Dukes Caitlin Carducci had three saves as DU's starting goalie, while Sara Beckstead had one.
Temple hosts Lafayette in its final game of the 2009 season on Wednesday, April 29 at 4 p.m. Seniors Hoffman, Lauren Carey and Andrea DeSabato will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
