VILLANOVA, Pa. Playing its final non-conference doubleheader of the season, the Temple softball team split with city-rival Villanova, taking the first game 1-0, but dropped the nightcap 4-2.
In the first game, the Owls managed just three hits, and none was bigger than senior Amanda Carver's one-out single in the third to score classmate Chante Pleydle. Pleydle was hit by a pitch, and stole second and third to put herself in scoring position as the winning run.
Carver had two hits on the day while swiping one base. Sophomore Chelsea Reicher accounted for the Owls only other hit.
Senior Katie Burdeaux (7-10) threw a complete-game shutout for the Cherry and White, fanning five and only allowing three hits.
As for the second game, freshman Sarah Reynolds (7-6) held the Wildcats scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, when the Wildcats took a 2-0 lead. The Owls battled back in the top of the 6th, when senior Courtney Norene smashed a two-run homer to tie the game at 2-2. Norene now has 26 home runs in her Temple career.
In the bottom of the sixth, Villanova tallied twice on a solo-home run by Meghan Morese and a one-run double by Natalie Hord. The Owls could not answer in the top of the 7th, and dropped the contest 4-2.
Reynolds threw six innings, striking out three.
The Cherry and White (15-23, 6-6) will travel to take on Saint Bonaventure in their final two contests of the regular season, which will determine whether or not the Owls advance to the A-10 Championships.
