PHILADELPHIA - Juniors Elyse Steiner and Anastasiia Rukavyshnykova have earned All-Atlantic 10 honors, the league announced today, in voting conducted by the head coaches. Steiner compiled an 11-8 record at #1 singles for the Owls, who finished second behind Richmond in the Atlantic 10 this spring. Rukavyshnykova, who led the team with 24 singles wins in 2008-09, was also named to the league's all-academic team.
Steiner had a 15-13 record in 2008-09 in singles and came on strong late in the season. She won 10 of her last 11 matches, with the only loss coming to eventual A-10 Player of the Year, Richmond's Pamela Duran, in the conference finals.
Eight of the wins during that stretch were straight set victories. She was also 2-1 at the A-10 Tournament.
In doubles, Steiner recorded an 18-11 record with a variety of teammates. She was 5-4 with sophomore Lucie Pazderova this spring at #1. It marks the second straight year that the Maryland transfer has earned first team all-league honors.
Rukavyshnyokva was 13-4 in the spring in singles, mostly from the #4 position (10-3). She won 12 straight matches from February 25-April 10, winning nine by straight sets.
The Kiev, Ukraine native also teamed with classmate Christine Clermont to compile a 14-9 doubles record. She earned second team all-league honors a year ago.
A kinesiology major, Rukavyshnykova carries a 3.78 grade point average. She was named to Temple's "Trustee Ten" at Wednesday's Breakfast of Champions, awarded to the student-athletes with the top 10 GPAs.
Temple had a 17-6 record, falling in the A-10 Championship match to Richmond, under first-year head coach Steve Mauro.
