Geasey Field Renovation Update

7.2.09 | Women's Lacrosse

July 2, 2009

PHILADELPHIA- Geasey Field, home to Temple's field hockey and lacrosse teams, is undergoing a major renovation this summer and head coaches Amanda Janney and Bonnie Rosen are checking in to tell fans all about it. The AstroTurf on Geasey is one of the largest permanent AstroTurf surfaces in the world, covering over 156,000 square feet.

5/27/09 Day 1

Throughout the summer months, the field hockey coaching staff will be writing a blog of the progress on the new turf project. After much planning, the construction officially began today, May 27th. The athletic and recreation departments worked collaboratively to replace the surface on the field located at 15th and Norris Streets on Main Campus. The project includes the disposal of the current turf, the reconstruction of the sub-surface, and the replacement of the turf with AstroTurf 12 carpet, complete with a drainage system.

The first signs of construction appeared today on the field with a few trucks and some equipment!  A handful of dedicated workers began to peel the green turf from the ground, rolling it into sections. The process seems difficult and will take time to rip up all the carpet. The coaching staff is very happy to see the progress made on the project. Temple Field Hockey players have been rushing into the office, clearly excited that the beginnings of a new surface have started. We are looking forward to playing on the new turf when it is completed!

6/18/09 Day 22

Despite some recent rainstorms, the rolls of turf continue to pile up each day. Who knew there was so much carpet on the field? The big rolls decorate the outer fence and more and more asphalt is visible underneath. The process seems to be coming along wonderfully and nearly all of the green has disappeared. The machine that rolls the strips of turf is fascinating and very convenient when you have 2 full fields of turf!

It's beginning to look like a parking lot, but the first steps have been made to a long project. Hopefully there will be better weather the next few weeks to keep the project on track to be done in August! Thanks again to all those who made this project possible to help our varsity programs compete at the highest level.

7/1/09 Day 35

The field hockey staff was recruiting at a national tournament in search of some new Owls last week, and had not been keeping tabs on the turf project back in Philadelphia! To our great surprise upon returning, the entire field is bare, and the asphalt has already been dug up. The two crowns in the middle of each field have been demolished and a dirt/stone layer is all that's left. The game field and the practice field have now been marked with wooden stakes and it looks like a lot has been done in the short time we were away. Hopefully the most time-consuming parts have been completed and we will see rapid progress on the field in the coming weeks.

7/21/09 Day 57

The mounds of stones continue to move each day as the drainage pipes are laid onto place. The edges of the game field are marked with boards, but there is no sign of the green turf yet. Great progress has been made since the initial ground breaking, and the facility will be wonderful once it is finished. The coaching staff anxiously awaits the completion of the project, and we are ecstatic that we are getting a brand new field! Every day we drive or walk past Geasey Field and see steps towards a great facility for our field hockey and women's lacrosse teams. Thank you to the dedicated people working on the field each day, we very much appreciate your efforts!
