PHILADELPHIA - Temple senior safety Dominique Harris (Washington, D.C.) is one of 106 student-athletes nominated for the Allstate American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team.
The Good Works Team honors college football players who make outstanding contributions in the areas of volunteerism and civic involvement. The 106 nominees surpass all previous single-season nominee totals in the 18-year history of the award. From these nominees, a voting panel consisting of former Good Works Team members and prominent college football media members will be responsible for selecting two 11-player Good Works Teams--one composed of players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and a combined team representing players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III, and the NAIA. The Good Works Teams will be announced during the 2009 football season.
A two-time team captain, Harris was the male recipient of the of the 2009 Temple Teammates Award in April, given to student-athletes who have demonstrated leadership qualities in the area of community service, inspiring others to engage in similar selfless civic endeavors for the purpose of improving the quality of life for those in the local community.
During his time on campus, Harris has participated in such annual events as the Thanksgiving Food Drive, the Bone Marrow Donor Drive, the Diamond Street Clean-up, and Partnership Field Day. He is a regular visitor to the sick children at St. Christopher's Hospital.
"Dominique really epitomizes what we're trying to get done with the student-athletes in our program," said head coach Al Golden. "He has the respect of his teammates."
Additionally, Harris accepted the newly-created T.E.A.M. Award, an acronym standing for Temple's Exceptional Acts for Mankind, for his team's exceptional community service efforts.
As a team, the Owls received the Robert P. Levy Community Service Award in July from the Philadelphia Sports Congress.
Temple opens the 2009 season on Thursday, Sept. 3 with Villanova at 7 p.m. in the inaugural Mayor's Cup at Lincoln Financial Field.
