Owls are one of 49 Division I teams to earn the distinction

GRAND LAKE, Colo. - Temple women's lacrosse was one of 49 Division I teams named a 2009 Academic Squad, announced today by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). Teams needed at least a 3.00 cumulative grade-point-average to earn the distinction.

The Owls were well above the mark, boasting one of the top team GPA's in the Temple athletic department at 3.29.

"I am thrilled to see the success that our team is having in the classroom," said head coach Bonnie Rosen. "I believe that the Temple Lacrosse program is one that not only compliments our student-athletes' educations but actually plays a key role in the higher education vision here at Temple. While our program's goals include seeing our student-athletes excel both in the classroom and on the field, this accomplishment is not one that we take for granted. I know this is a result of their hard work and commitment to learning and achieving in the classroom. I couldn't be more proud of them!"

Individually, the Owls were among both the University and Atlantic 10's elite, with 13 players posting a 3.3 GPA for the year and 19 earning at least a 3.0. Junior Chelsea Rosiek was named to the A-10's All-Academic Team, as well as Temple's Director's Honor Roll. In addition to Rosiek, Deanna Balerno, Tess Bishop, Lauren Caminiti, Lindsey Colferai, Jessica Colucci, Brittney Hoffman, Keelin Hood, Katie Phillips and Tracy Zimmer also earned Director's Honor Roll status. Allison McWilliams, Missy Schweitzer, Ann Stouffer and Kelsey Zenuk garnered at least a 3.5 GPA to earn President's Honor Roll status. Stouffer, an entrepreneurship major with a 3.84 GPA, was named one of TU's Trustee Ten, which recognizes the top 10 student athletes in the athletic department.

The women's lacrosse team's academic success is not a recent phenomenon, as 17 of the 23 total players in 2009 had at least a 3.0 GPA or better for their entire college career.
