Williams posts seven saves in loss

VILLANOVA, PA - After a one hour, five-minute delay due to lightning, the Temple women's soccer team inaugurated their 2009 season against Big Five foe Villanova Friday evening at West Campus Soccer Complex. The Owls went down 2-0 in the first half, and could not mount a comeback in the second, eventually dropping their first contest of the season, 4-0.

Defender Meridith Crowell led the way for TU with two shots and one shot on goal. In her collegiate debut, freshman Jackie Krostek tallied a shot while senior Carly Metzger also posted a shot on the day. Crowell and Krostek were the only two Owls to play all 90 minutes in the contest.

Villanova's Katie Ryan broke the scoreless tie in the 20th minute, tallying on a feed from Heidi Sabatura. Nine minutes later, the Wildcats struck again when Erin Byrnes finished a deflection from the left corner of the box, bringing the score to 2-0. Sabatura would find the back of the net twice in the second half, eventually closing the game 4-0.

The Cherry and White struggled to find a groove on offense, only tallying four shots.

Owls' junior goalkeeper Kara Williams made seven saves in her first start of the season.

The Owls (0-1-0, 0-0 A-10) take the pitch at Ambler for the first time next Friday, August 28, when they face off with St. Francis (Pa.) at 4:00 p.m.
