Senior midfielder notches his 21st career assist setting up Witmer for eventual game-winner
Ambler, PA - Senior midfielder J.T. Noone made history at Ambler Sports Complex Sunday afternoon, eclipsing the Temple all-time assist record by setting up freshman Tyler Witmer for the eventual game-winner in the Owls' 2-0 victory over Albany.
Noone's 21st career assist leaves him at the top of a prestigious list of TU passers. He now ranks ahead of Peter Dicce (1982-85), Scott Rieber (1987-90), Ray DeStephanis (1995-98), and Tony Donatelli (2002-05) for first all-time.
“It's amazing, he really deserves it. J.T. has been great for us the four years we've had him, and I think that total will be difficult to top for a long time,” commented head coach Dave MacWilliams. “He has beat out some really quality players, Tony Donatelli being one of them, and he has really meant a lot to our program.”
“It took a couple games to finally get it, but I'm glad to finally have it under my belt so I can concentrate on the rest of the season,” said Noone. “We made a great effort today, and I'm really happy to get the win.”
Owl forward Tyler Witmer broke the tie eight minutes before halftime when Noone slipped a ball past an Albany defender onto the foot of Witmer, who blasted a 20-yard shot into the back of the net. The goal was Witmer's team leading fourth of the season, and gave the Owls a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
The second half began with back and forth action, each team having numerous scoring chances. However, when a Temple goal was called back due to a controversial offside call, the Great Danes saw a glimmer of hope.
The Owls would not be outdone this Sunday, with Owl goalkeeper Bret Mollon making an outstanding diving save on Albany forward Bo Jelovac to preserve the shutout. Mollon posted seven saves on the day.
Minutes later, senior midfielder Mike Puppolo received a pass from sophomore Rodrigo Zuleta, dribbled from midfield, and ripped the ball into the corner of the net increasing the Owl lead to 2-0. Puppolo's goal was his first of the season.
“Today I thought we played good at times, but I think we still need to work on a few things,” said MacWilliams of his teams' efforts. “Albany is a good team and we managed to shut them out.”
Albany held a slight shot advantage, out shooting Temple 15-14 in the contest. The Owls' held a 9-2 advantage in corners.
Next up Temple will host soccer-six rival Penn on Wednesday, September 23 at 3:30 p.m.
