Steady second half pressure from TU nearly mounts comeback
Ambler, PA - The Temple women's soccer team (4-4-1, 0-2-0 A-10) suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss against conference foe Rhode Island (3-5-1, 1-1-0 A-10), Sunday afternoon at the Ambler Sports Complex in their Atlantic 10 home opener. Rhode Island's Alexis Veith put the Rams ahead for good as halftime neared in the contest, with the Owls tallying a late goal in the 2-1 loss.
The game was even for eleven minutes until URI's Ina Bjorklid played a ball over the top of the Owl defense to a streaking Stephanie Santos who pushed the ball past Owl goalkeeper Kara Williams into the far post.
The Owls kept their heads up and continued to battle the Rams, as a hard shot from Kate Gray forced Rams' goalie Tara Murphy to make a diving save to preserve the 1-0 lead.
At 41:22, just minutes before the conclusion of the first half, Rhode Island substitute Alexis Veith powered a shot from 18-yards out into the upper portion of the net. Rams' midfielder Jennifer Barrientos was awarded the assist. The first half ended with Rhode Island holding a 2-0 advantage but the shots were even a 5-5.
Despite the deficit, the Cherry and White continued to pursue victory. The Rams staved off the relentless pressure until junior Stephanie Ferretti swerved a corner kick into play that found the back of the net at 61:21, cutting the Ram's lead in half. Rhode Island was on their heels, but the Owl's could not seem to break past the Ram defense.
The teams ended the game with ten shots each. TU's Williams had three saves in the contest.
The Cherry and White returns to home to host St. Bonaventure on October 9th at 4:00 p.m. They continue conference play on the road, facing Richmond on October 2nd at 7:00 p.m.
