Elisha Joseph Earns Honorable Mention Accolades

CLEVELAND – Temple seniors DB Dominique Harris (Washington, D.C.) and TE Steve Maneri (Saddle Brook, N.J.) have been named to the 2009 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Football Team, the MAC announced on Tuesday. The 32-member team of honorees was selected by the schools' Faculty Athletics Representatives.

Harris received the 2009 Owl Award as Temple's most valuable player. A four-year starter and two-time team captain, Harris earned his second All-MAC honor this fall. He played in every game of his collegiate career with 44 starts. He finished the 2009 season third in team tackles with 71. He also had two sacks and a team-best nine break-ups. Harris was a finalist for the 2009 Wuerffel Trophy.

Named to the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine first-team Academic All-District Football Team, Harris also earned recognition on the 2009 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Football Team. The recipient of the Athletic Department's 2009 Temple Teammates Community Service Award and the 2008 and 2009 Captains' Awards, Harris earned the monthly Owl Outreach Award for Community Service twice.

A senior safety with a 3.50 grade-point average, Harris received a bachelor's degree in criminal justice last May. He is currently pursuing a master's degree in Liberal Arts.

A third team All-MAC honoree, team captain Maneri started all 13 games at tight end. Mostly blocking on the line, he added 12 receptions for 134 yards and two touchdowns. The three-year starter earned the team's 2009 John Rienstra Award for excellence in off-season conditioning and 2009 Captains' Award.

The senior is cited on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll with a 3.20 GPA in communications. Maneri was named to the 2009 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Football Team.

Earning Honorable Mention honors was junior DT Elisha Joseph (Hartford, Conn.). A three-year starter, Joseph played defensive tackle in every game this fall. He also played on the punt and field goal units. The recipient of the Athletic Dept.'s inaugural Enterprise Spirit & Sportsmanship Award in 2009, he was one of 20 true freshmen to see game action and one of 12 true freshmen to earn a starting role in 2007.

Joseph is cited on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll with a 3.31 GPA in criminal justice. Joseph was named to the 2009 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Football Team.

The number of honorees on the Academic All-MAC Team is the number that is set for the specific sport or 33% of the number of nominees, whichever is greater. The remaining student-athletes are recognized as Academic Honorable Mention selections.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.

Temple (9-4, 7-1 MAC) concluded the 2009 season with a trip to the EagleBank Bowl, its first bowl appearance in 30 years. The Owls won a single-season record nine consecutive games en route to the MAC East co-championship.
